Near-Term Thinking

Take your time with decisions, especially those about the distant future. When something is far off, we tend to focus only on the good parts and forget about the potential downsides. Here’s two tricks to make better decisions:

  • Imagine that you have to make good on your decision today or sometime this week. Does it still seem like a good idea? This way, you’re more likely to think about the immediate effects and responsibilities.
  • Sleep on it: Never underestimate the power of a good night’s sleep. Sleeping on a decision literally gives your brain time to process and come up with new ideas or concerns you might not have considered before. Often, you’ll wake up with a clearer view of the decision and its consequences. This method helps you see the whole picture, not just the rosy parts.
