Linking new and old habits

To enhance learning, forming new habits is crucial. Ideally, we build these new habits by finding ways to link them to existing ones that we would like to keep. Wondering how to go about it?

Connect continuous learning with a specific time, place, or after a certain behaviour by associating it with an activity you need to perform.

For example:

  • If you want to go running right after waking up, put your running shoes next to your bed and make an intention to go running on Mondays at 7 am.
  • If you want to spend more time learning or engaging with new material, be intentional and increase your ability to go through with it by scheduling it in your day.

Be very specific:

  • “I will (behaviour) at (time) in (location)” OR
  • “After I (current behaviour), I will (desired behaviour)”

Give yourself time to establish the new habit, striving for consistency. If you miss a day, don’t worry—just try again.
