Future Thinking

Imagine you’re reading something like a policy or a set of rules. Now, think about how someone 10 years from now might see it. Here’s how to do it:

  • Future Perspective: Pretend you’re in the future. What parts of the document might seem outdated or wrong?
  • Changing Views: Think about what new ideas or changes might happen in the next 10 years. How would these affect how the document is seen?
  • Applying It to Everyday Decisions: Think about everyday choices, like how we recycle or use technology. Ask yourself, “What are we doing today that might be seen as ineffective or harmful in 10 years? How can we make better choices now?”
  • Beyond Current Limits: Remember, we’re often limited by today’s rules and politics. Try to think beyond these. How would someone without these limits view the document?

This approach encourages us to put on our ‘future thinking’ hat, helping us to make proactive and thoughtful decisions. The process of future thinking or mental simulations can be helpful in many domains of work and leisure. See our tips in the memory dimension.
