Choose the Right Time for Big Decisions

When it comes to making important decisions, timing is key. Just like a muscle that gets tired after a workout, our ability to make good choices can wear out when we’re exhausted or hungry. This is because decision-making is closely tied to self-control, which can weaken if we made extensive use of it already during the day.

So, if you’re facing a big decision, don’t rush into it at the end of a long day. Wait until you’re rested and feeling sharp. This could be after a good night’s sleep or following a relaxing break. When your energy levels are up, your mind is clearer, and you’re more likely to make a decision you won’t regret later. Think of it as picking the right moment to make your best move.

  • Make it a habit to say ‘I’ll think about it’. Don’t say yes too quickly
  • Sleep on it. In the evening, think about the fact that you will have to make a decision. Our brains are used to solving problems during sleep
  • Schedule time in your calendar when the decision is due as visual reminder
