Understand Values in Text

Ever wondered what beliefs or values are behind the words you read or hear? Whether it’s a company policy, a brochure, or even guidelines, there are often underlying values. Here’s how you can spot them:

  • Look for the Core Message: What is the main idea being shared? For example, if a document talks a lot about justice in healthcare, it likely values health as a human right.
  • Think About Why It Was Written: For instance, guidelines on data privacy might be there because the authors believe in protecting personal information.
  • Search for Hidden Beliefs: Sometimes, these values aren’t obvious. You might need to read between the lines to understand the deeper beliefs.

Every piece of writing or speech often reflects what the author or speaker believes in. As opposed to the premise in texts, values such as competition, empathy, wisdom, nurturing, are reflecting more general statements about the behaviours and actions we consider worthwhile. Try to uncover these beliefs to better understand the writers’ perspective.
